Confidence at Christie's Post-war and Contemporary Art Auction

Andy Warhol portrait of Elizabeth Taylor, Liz, sold for $23.5 million (with premium). Former owner the actor Hugh Grant paid only $3.5 million for it at Sotheby’s in 2001.

The Christie's room yesterday was filled with longtime collectors who seemed little worried about oil prices or housing slumps. I'm stunned, dealer Barbara Gladstone said. Clearly people wanted to buy.

Christie’s auctioned off $325 million worth of post-war and contemporary art at its Manhattan salesroom, its pre-sale estimate was $271 million to $373 million.
