Billionaire Pinchuk Names Art Center Director

Steel billionaire Victor Pinchuk named Eckhard Schneider director of his Kiev art center.

The Pinchuk Center opened in September 2006 as the first private museum of contemporary art in the former Soviet Union. Since then, it has had 300,000 visitors.
Victor Pinchuk is having a great impact on the market, said Simon de Pury, chairman of the auction house Phillips de Pury & Co.
Ever since he opened the center, others in Ukraine and Russia have emulated him and taken an interest in contemporary art.

The contemporary art market in both Ukraine and Russia has really taken off in the past two years, and I expect this growth to continue, De Pury of Phillips said.  [from bloomberg]

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov - Portrait of Power For the Rich Russian Art Collector

Russia is the world’s second-biggest oil exporter. According to Forbes, the number of Russian billionaires jumped to 110 in 2008 from 36 in 2004. This new wealthy class is eager to spend on luxury items and fine art.

People are looking for a way to invest and enjoy investing, and art is a great way to do that,' said Victoria Gelfand, director of Gagosian's London gallery who heads operations with Russia.

Gagosian's Moscow opening came a day after Dasha Zhukova and billionaire Roman Abramovich opened the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture, a non-profit organization that will promote contemporary art and culture in Russia. [from bloomberg]

Art Investment Could Well Be The Pension Funds of the Future

Despite the financial markets being in turmoil and fears of a recession, Hirst's auction proved that there are still plenty with money to spend. We see no sign of a slowdown in spending, but their buying patterns do suggest that funds are diverting into more tangible, safer goods like art, jewelery and cars. We've insured more £1 million classic cars and diamond rings this year than in the past. As well as bringing enjoyment, these investments could well be the pension funds of the future.Simon Mobey, personal lines manager for UK & Ireland of Chubb Insurance, an insurer of the ultra-wealthy, said. Christie's Is Going Into The Gallery Business

Christie's auction house is going into the gallery business.
Last year, Christie's International (The Group), the parent company of the London-based auctioneer, bought cutting-edge London gallery Haunch of Venison.
Friday, backed by Christie's billionaire owner, Francois Pinault, it opened a huge satellite gallery in New York with an impressive array of Abstract Expressionist masterworks on loan from top museums and collectors.
Christie's stresses that Haunch of Venison's gallery business of representing artists and their estates is managed independently from the auction house. [read more here]

Art sale defies Wall Street

Damien Hirst Art sale defies Wall Street.
In a gamble that could have ramifications for other artists, Hirst was bypassing his dealers - the Gagosian Gallery, based in the United States, and White Cube, based in London - and taking his work straight to Sothebys auction with a sale that began here on Monday night and was to conclude on Tuesday.

The bet was paying off: The first session's total was $127.2 million, above the high estimate of $112 million.

A crowd of collectors, dealers, celebrities was waiting the doors open. All three members of the Mugrabi family was at the Sothebys sale in London.

Jose Mugrabi, a New York dealer, said: "Today people believe more in art than the stock market. At least it's something you can enjoy." (at the Hirst sale) [from Herald Tribune]

Art is a Better Investment than Bling?

Art does have, intrinsic value, namely the highest possible: beauty.
There are no daily quotations for a painting on one’s wall as for shares or bonds, and investing in art means knowledge. []

A husband of a wealthy divorcee had paid about $1.7 million for her collection of precious-stone necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings.
Since the stash wasn’t among the assets contested in the divorce, she set out shortly after their separation to sell it off to a consignment shop or auction house. (She kept receipts and boxes for everything).
The best price she could get for the whole lot was $400,000. That means the jewelry lost nearly three-quarters of its purchase price. Bling, in other words, is a bad investment. [from wsj]
