Sold a Basquiat Art Bought an Apartment

Art Collectors Mary-Ann Monforton and Morris Shuman in their Stuyvesant Heights brownstone.

Mary-Ann Monforton and Morris Shuman bought a new home and renovated it with the money from the sale of one of the several Jean-Michel Basquiat paintings she bought directly from the artist at the beginning of his career.

This is a story on what it means to live with art and the benefits of having a great interest in painting.

"This is the house that art built," Mr. Shuman said.

“God bless Jean-Michel,” said Ms. Monforton, who became a friend of the artist when, at about age 17, he used to sit on her stoop in the East Village, across the street from a “Flat’s Fixed” sign. The motif later appeared in many of his paintings.

“We thank him all the time,” Mr. Shuman said.

The couple still buy art, often at charity auctions. Last year, Ms. Monforton bought a work by Kara Walker at a Bomb magazine benefit.

“This is my I.R.A. — Individual Retirement Art,” she said.

Occasionally some of the art is displayed at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, where Mr. Fisher serves as an officer on the board of trustees.

Want to be like the Vogels?

You don't have to be a Rockefeller to collect art...
...have a passion and go directly with the artists.

Herbert and Dorothy Vogel, a postal worker and a librarian, respectively, who amassed one of the most important contemporary art collections to date on a modest budget.
The Moment NY Times blog has a wonderful interview with Dorothy Vogel. Here and a video.

Rumor has it the gallerist Leo Castelli sold you a lot of your work.
We bought our Donald Judd from him. He was a wonderful man and very supportive. We did not buy a lot through him though because he always gave us artists’s phone numbers and told us to call them directly.

One Question to Miami Art Collector Rosa de la Cruz

Regia Marinho abstract painting

Rosa talk ... how we need to stop partying and start looking at the art.

How do you and Carlos buy art? Do you make all the decisions together?

We’ve been married for 45 years, and we always consult each other. We look at the collection, and we buy works that we think will enhance it. We don’t buy on impulse. We are not buying just to accumulate. Our collection has a strong spiritual side.

One more question.
Do you like to see and buy art over the Internet ?
